Holiday Inn Town Lake – Marigold

Who gives a crap that you spoke at South by Southwest? It only counts if you crush it. We created the Cranky Talk Workshops a couple of years ago in a dedicated effort to eradicate mediocre conference presentations and now we’re bringing our six-pack of kickass to Austin. If you want to test drive your SXSW panel or solo presentation in front of a critical, but highly supportive workshop audience, consider participating in this intense event. (You must sign up in advance at Cranky Talk). And if you’re speaking at another conference soon after SXSW, we can help with that, too. Just stop by during the workshop with your prepared presentation and get some Cranky one-on-one coaching. (No advance sign-up required.)What’s the deal is with all this Crankiness? Cranky means that we don’t waste our time or the time of others. It means that we have no patience for bullshit so feedback is direct and blunt. You have been warned.

Y Rappers R Better Marketers than U

Saturday, March 10 at 11:00AM -12:00PM CST
InterContinental Stephen F. Austin – Assembly Room

To quote Jay-Z, “I’m not a businessman, I’m a business, Man.” No one connects more deeply with their audiences than rappers. They’re fearless marketers — stirring up trouble, grabbing the mic, commanding attention, and ultimately, selling a ton of product. This session will look at (and listen to) how rappers turn personal brands into marketing platforms, including how they project a consistent brand image, market to new audiences (rappers have been doing this well since RunDMC met Aerosmith), innovate in a digital world (T-Pain’s popular Autotune App, for example), cross promote with advertisers, leverage product placement (mmm, Cristal), and drive culture. Last year, Bing won the 2011 Grand Prix at Cannes International Festival of Creativity by launching Jay-Z’s new book. The question is, which brand was the bigger winner?

How Digital Maps Navigate the Human Condition

Saturday, March 10 at 5:00PM – 6:00PM CST
Hyatt Regency Austin – Texas Ballroom 1-3

Digital is recasting the landscape of maps, a metamorphosis that’s not yet complete. It has rewritten the rules by which maps behave and what they can do. This makes it not just an inflection point in the map category but in the history of human experience. We’ll share the latest development in map technology and show how a collection of digital and non digital inputs – including past history, social media and even mood – when added to basic geographic wayfaring expands the boundaries of human possibility. It’s navigation that enriches the human condition like never before. You may never see a map the same way again.

Guy Gould-Davies, Director of Marketing & Digital Strategy, SapientNitro

Make Your Film Debut with SapientNitro, FiLMiC Pro and The Original iPhone Film Festival

Friday, March 9 through Tuesday, March 13 – The Streets of Austin

Think you’ve got what it takes to be the next Scorsese? We’ll help you make it happen—right on your iPhone!

First? You need the FilMiC Pro app, click here for a free download during SXSW.

Then? A theme. Use the app’s advanced controls to capture man-on-the-street videos, where the budding stars of your SXSW film answer questions like:

  • What brought you to SXSW?
  • What’s the coolest event or panel you have been to?
  • What is the “must do” SXSW experience?

When you’re done shooting, follow the simple instructions below to upload. We’ll let you know when your masterpiece is online!

  1. Save the movie file to your iPhone’s Camera Roll.
  2. Back in the FilMiC Pro app, import the clip into the FilMiC Clip Library (don’t worry about changing any import settings—it will compress the file automatically).
  3. To upload, select your clip, then click on the button in the Clip Library that says “SXSW Uploads: Original iPhone Film Festival.”

OR, if you want to maintain full video quality, you can do this instead: Save the file directly to the FilMiC Clip Library instead of your Camera Roll. Upload the uncompressed file directly to OIFF by clicking the “SXSW Uploads: Original iPhone Film Festival” button located in the upper right of the Clip Library. Keep in mind that the uploading process will take awhile, so we recommend allowing the file to upload in the background while you charge your phone at night.

Have fun out there!
